  • Coral Springs was primarily developed by Coral Ridge Properties, Inc., a company founded by James S. Hunt and Joseph P. Taravella.
  • Here’s some background information on its development:
  • Planned City: Coral Springs was envisioned as one of Florida’s first truly planned cities. Hunt and Taravella had a specific vision for a community with ample lots, brick colonial-style public buildings, and strict city codes to maintain a consistent aesthetic.
  • Initial Land Acquisition: The land that became Coral Springs was initially marshy and used as a green bean farm and later for cattle ranching by the Lyons family. Coral Ridge Properties purchased the first parcel of land, 3,860 acres, from the Lyons family in 1961 for $1 million. They acquired additional acreage throughout the 1960s.
  • Founding and Early Sales: The city was officially chartered on July 10, 1963. By 1964, a master plan for a city of 50,000 residents was in place. The first sale of building lots in July 1964 was highly successful, netting $1.6 million in a reported seven minutes.
  • Promotional Efforts: To attract interest to what was then considered a remote area, developers built the landmark Covered Bridge in 1964, which served as an entrance to the new city and a sales technique. They even recruited talk show host Johnny Carson for a land sale event, where he purchased an investment plot.
  • Westinghouse Acquisition: In 1966, Westinghouse purchased Coral Ridge Properties, bringing modern style and innovation to the city’s development.
  • Growth and Infrastructure: Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Coral Springs experienced rapid growth, adding public schools, shopping centers (like Coral Square, opened in 1984), and parks. The construction of the Sawgrass Expressway in 1986 further contributed to its expansion.
  • Strict Codes: Coral Ridge Properties established strict landscaping and sign laws, contributing to the city’s distinctive appearance and higher real estate values compared to other areas in the county. For instance, Coral Springs was notable for having one of the first McDonald’s restaurants without the iconic Golden Arches sign due to these regulations.
  • “Built-Out” City: Coral Springs reached residential “build-out” in 2003, meaning most of the available land for residential development has been utilized.
